I have just read some tweets and a blog on how Pope Francis is heretical as was Vatican II; this from Roman Catholic faithful. They expressed the sentiment that the Vatican II and post Vatican II popes were not faithfully or theologically representing the Christianity which is that of St Peter’s Throne.
Now I cannot put words into their mouths BUT to me it appears as they were attacking these contemporary popes on the basis that the popes from 32AD-1962AD were infallible, and subsequent popes have expounded heretical ideas; essentially those of Vatican II. The mood of the conversation was “Oh for a return to the good old days when Catholics were Catholics.” Well, a lesson in history may well be in order here…
Firstly, I recall from historical study matter that the early church held mass in the vernacular, not Latin. Secondly, that early church bishops were very involved in the church and pastoral matters, they did not buy their way into bishoprices – or papacy for that matter as did those in the medieval church. Thirdly, that the Lord’s Super of the early church was hospitality, not a rite held in a foreign language in which the body of Christ (ie, congregation) was excluded from drinking the wine etc. The list goes on.
So to quote Pope Alexander VI (Pope from 1492-1503):
“(To Lucrezia Borgia) Do people say that I am both your father and your lover? Let the world, that heap of vermin as ridiculous as they are feeble-minded, believe the most absurd tales about the mighty! You must know that for those destined to dominate others, the ordinary rules of life are turned upside down and duty acquires an entirely new meaning. Good and evil are carried off to a higher, different plane.”
And to quote Pope Francis (Pope from 2013-):
“The worship of the golden calf of old has found a new and heartless image in the cult of money and the dictatorship of an economy which is faceless and lacking any truly human goal.”
No competition…. absolutely none.
